The Silent Minority

The Silent Minority

Well, I was watching CSPAN when I did view on my television the "prowar" rally put on by the Move America Forward. It was a quaint little gathering of several hundred people. The big name draw to their event was none other the "great American" (that is how they introduced him) G Gordon Liddy.

The moment that I saw him I knew that I saw cartoon. And as cartoons go, I thought that I should at least let you all on why I call it "The Silent Minority." In short, I love irony. So as irony goes Liddy and those that preceded him as well as those that came after him kept referring to themselves as the Silent Majority. Well as you can guess, these folks are not in the majority and I can't recall a time when they were ever silent.

I guess it is all about introspection.

Propositions 75 &76

Propositions 75 & 76

Yeah, two for the price of one! Prop 75 I have already commented upon. But not Prop 76. This proposition is in and of itself a finely crafted piece of legislation that allows the governor dictatorial power in the budget process. People that were concerned with Schwarzenegger's disregard for education spending know full well that the passage of Prop 76 allows the governor to take funds earmarked for education and direct them to the general fund while ignoring the requirements of Proposition 98. And the best part for the governor is that he won't have to worry about paying back the money owed to education.

With the possible passage of Prop 76 monies that are supposed to go to educating students from kindergarden to college would be subjected to the whims of the governor. Imagine education funds spent on corporate tax breaks and to pay off the looming debt the state is going to incur from the bond measure that was supposed to bail the state out of it's billion dollar deficit.

And to think, the same people backing Props 74, 75, 76, 78 have no problem with state government reaching into the pockets and lives of working Californian's decry the passage of Proposition 79 because they fear the government making decisions in peoples everyday lives.

The goals supporters of Schwarzenegger and the aforementioned propositions are interested in destroying unions and weakening workers rights in politics and their rights to affordable healthcare. Just ask policemen, firemen, teachers, nurses and heathcare workers. Schwarzenegger is only interested protecting those that have donated millions to fund the November 8th special election.

If you don't believe me, I extoll you to read the propositions that will appear on the states special election ballot. Are you casting your vote to the peril of others, to us all?

Proposition 75

Proposition 75

Proposition 75, the Paycheck Deception Act is how the ballot should read. Here again is another proposition that was funded by corporate special interests for the low low price of $1.00 dollar per signature.

I had the experience of speaking to a couple of the corporate shills who sold out ($1.00 dollar at a time) to the big bad special interest groups they had at one time opposed when Gray Davis was the Governor of Calee-fornia. Of those few that I had the pleasure of speaking with were completely unaware of the fact that Arnold Schwarzenegger has raised more money as governor from special interest donations than Gray Davis.

And in accordance with the gods of all things ironic, Schwarzenegger's political contributors are the same corporate lobbying groups that gave generously to Davis when he was still in office. Too bad irony is so misunderstood.

One final thought regarding the Paycheck Deception Act; and it has to to with the belief that coincidentally Republican's hold that campaign contributions are another form of free speech. In concert with Republican support of Prop 75, it becomes rather obvious that the Republican's believe limiting the free speech of unions in the form of campaign contributions is not only desireable but preferred. After all, it is unfair that corporations donate $24.00 dollars to every $1.00 dollar donated by unions. There cannot be parity in politics until the corporations to union ratio is 24:0.

Not even the word hypocrite is adequate to enough to describe those that support Prop 75 and believe campaign contributions are another form of free speech.

All hail the duped for they no not what they do.

Proposition 74

Proposition 74

In response to the November special elections called for by Governor Schwarzenegger I have decided to highlight the governor and his supporters agenda with cartoons that definately make a point. Whether you agree or not is another story.

It is most disturbing to know that in a society that prides itself on instant gratification that too few citizens actually read the voter information that is available. Instant gratification in the voters means letting others think for you, as you decide to vote for propositions that mask their true intentions in 30 second commercials aired ad nausium.

I figure that I can repost these cartoons as the election grows closer. I can only hope that my cartoons will provoke people to think before blinding voting because they liked the ad on television.

Critique of the War President

There are those that will explicate President Bush’s New Orleans speech line-by-line pointing out the rhetorical and the impractical. And to them I say, knock yourselves out!

For me the speech was a combination of “war president” meets the theatre of the absurd. And to make it more interesting I figure that I would leave it up to the reader to decide which parts of the speech they considered to be the “war president’s” strong points along with the absurd.

Not sure where to begin, I figure that I should start with his lighted entrance. It was as though his handlers were trying to recreate the feel, the ambiance of a triumphant leader in a post September 11th world, standing upon a heap of rubble with bullhorn in hand. Yet I couldn’t get over the blue shirt Bush was wearing.

Blue is considered to be a creative, cool color. Noting that the speech was lacking in creativity the blue shirt might have been a way of disarming those people who are already put off by Bush. Considering public support for Bush is lower than Bill Clinton’s when he was being pilloried for his affair with Monica Lewinsky I imagine that Karl Rove and Andy Card were hoping that blue shirt would mask the president’s insincere smirk.

It was rather clear that the speechwriters where combing through older speeches as they cobbled together this hastily planned speech. And in the fashion of the “war president” Bush let us know that in no uncertain terms that “we will do what it takes, and stay as long as it takes” in New Orleans.

Whew! Nothing like the recycled rhetoric of the “war president” to really inspire the public; I know that Bush likes to compare the war in Iraq to World War II and the Cold War, but to hurricanes? Another bit of information that I learned from the Bush presidency is that entrepreneurship is the key to building a democracy in Iraq as it is in rebuilding New Orleans. Who knew? I didn’t. Did you?

Perhaps this is why Bush decided to play television reporter “on the scene” as he recounted the past two weeks of news reports like the rest of the country hadn’t already heard and seen the stories he sought to highlight. Somebody should tell Bush that while he was watching the DVD version of Hurricane Katrina’s devastation the country and the world was watching it live.

So as I listened to the repeated gestures of compassion and his belief in his faith I thought about how Pat Robertson was on the list of non-profits that was selected to help the “refugees” of New Orleans. I am a little nervous about the government relying upon Bush’s “armies of compassion.” Although it might explain why Bush was so interested in sitting in the swing on Trent Lott’s rebuilt front porch.

And speaking of rebuilding homes, entrepreneurs, and the Gulf Opportunity Zone, I found Bush’s call for tax relief more of the same, sacrifice without sacrifice particularly if you are one of those companies that received a no-bid contract to help rebuild Iraq. Oops, I meant to write companies that received no-bid contracts to rebuild New Orleans. Sorry, its just that in listening to Bush it became harder and harder to differentiate between Iraq and New Orleans.

And as Bush neared the end of his presentation it was clear that whatever effect the blue shirt may have had on those viewers (especially those who think that poverty and racism affected the federal government’s response to Katrina) was lost when Bush started talking about gentrification, I mean the plan he referred to as Urban Homesteading.

Personally, I am concerned about one aspect of Bush’s presentation. I was wondering if Trent Lott’s home and porch would be rebuilt before a congressional investigation is completed into the failures of his administration, the Department of Homeland Security, and FEMA in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Investigation and Resignation

Well it was certainly a busy day for Bush and his administration. Today Bush was in New Orleans for his third visit. Apparently Bush is making good in his pledge to lead an inquiry into the slow response time of FEMA to the destruction created by Katrina. I don't know about the rest of you, but I don't find anything reassuring about Bush's statement, "What I intend to do is lead an investigation to find out what went right and what went wrong. We still live in an unsettled world. We want to make sure we can respond properly if there is a WMD (weapons of mass destruction) attack or another major storm."

Of course Bush's visit was more about the slight of hand that comes with photo-ops. As Bush and the political paparazzi where following Bush about the city back in Washington DC incompetent Mike Brown was resigning his position as the Director of FEMA, effectively immediately. And as scripted, Bush was asked by the ever "observant" media throngs that surrounded him whether he knew about Brown's resignation. Bush on cue responded "Maybe you know something I don't."

Bush acted suprised and called short his investigating in the Gulf region to learn more about the resignation he should have know about since Saturday, considering that Chief of Staff Andy Card spoke to Brown and even asked him not to resign.

It is shear folly to believe that Bush didn't know that Brown wasn't going to resign today. To further my point, there was the near instantanious replacement of Brown with R. David Paulison who actually had experience in the field of emergency preparedness and response. Surely filling the shoes of a man that once headed the International Arabian Horse Association will be a tall order. It was nice of Governor Jeb Bush to recommend Paulson for the position.

It wouldn't be fair to the former head of FEMA if I didn't point out that he followed in the footsteps of the Medal of Freedom recipient George Tenet who also fell on George Bush's sword. It is pretty clear that Brown was hoping that his resignation would lift Bush's sagging poll numbers as his statement in part reads "The focus has got to be on FEMA, what the people are trying to do down there." There was also this eye-opener, "I think it's in the best interest of the agency and the best interest of the president to do that and get the media focused on the good things that are going on, instead of me."

Yeah, it was pretty clear that Brown's being relieved of duty by Michael Chertoff despite the president's high praises was the beginning of his return to the public sector. Perhaps the reason Brown waited to announce his resignation was because he was trying to line up his next job interview. Of course this time around it will be a lot harder to falsify his resume.

Next time I will have to talk about the role of loyalty, lies and the refusal of Bush and his adminstration to admit that they (often) make "big time" mistakes.

How Many?

How Many?

And so, I put the question to you; How many excuses has Bush cited to justify his "stay the course" invasion and occupation of Iraq?

Don't be bashful...give it a shot. Test yourself and see how many excuses you can remember Bush talking about over the past two and one half years? If I were a gambling man I would be willing to wager that Bush wouldn't be able to remember them all and he is counting upon you, John and Jane Q. Public to be as forgetful/absentminded as he is.
