Fiscal leadership and the MBA President
Under the leadership of President George W Bush the Pentagon has decided that competitive bidding and purchasing directly from manufactures is not cost effective. In place of the "inefficient" process the Pentagon has implemented the Prime Vender Program.
The Pentagon is saving taxpayers money by purchasing products from third party middlemen who profit by marking up prices as much as 89 percent. According to Knight Ridder Newspapers Pentagon program costing taxpayers millions in inflated prices. As recently as 2003 the Pentagon paid $17,267 for a custom refrigerator from MRG Equipment Co. Now under the Prime Vendor Program that same refrigerator cost the Pentagon $32,640.50.
Talk about government inefficiency. And to think, Republicans touted the benefits of having an MBA president. Perhaps the Republican’s were talking about the benefits for corporations and not the average taxpayer.
Of course all is not lost as there is further good news for John and Jane Q. Public. As reported by the Washington Post, Contractor accused of over billing US. Apparently Unisys Corp. has been over billing the US government to the tune of 171,000 hours at $131.00 an hour. Unisys has finished installing the "state-of-the-art computer network" in only half of the airports that are to be upgraded.
Imagine, all this under the watchful eyes of the fiscally conservative Republican Party as they create a smaller and more efficient government.

Bill Moyers had a brilliant interview with a gentleman a year or so ago who had worked for the Pentagon for like 30+ years named Chuck Spinney. (http://www.pbs.org/now/transcript/transcript245_full.html ) He writes all sorts of articles about the Pentagon.
But if you are really into the topic, check out the Pentagon's Inspector General's website. Oooh, it's creepy.
Great topic!!! On of my pet peeves. Can't take care of people suffering from hurricanes, but we can line the pockets of greedy, profiteering bastards out to gut our nation's collective resources. Some of them should be locked away as traitors.
